La Serenissima!

Finally, I have experienced the wonder that is Venice which exceeded all my expectations. Aside from the heart stopping beauty of its architecture and the staggering engineering genius that holds it all up, there’s the wonderful cliches of the gondolas, amazing food, an endless stream of vistas and the incredible weight of its precious heritage and culture.

In the ‘modern’ era, one thinks of Gustav Mahler (Death in Venice), John Ruskin, Dirk Bogarde, Thomas Mann, Nicholas Roeg, Peggy Guggenheim….. Venice is a sensory assault on all levels and despite actually being there and touching its ancient stones, it maintains a dreamlike presence that stays with you long afterwards.
